A Study in Drowning

Title: A Study in Drowning

Author: Ava Reid

Genre: Fantasy, Dark Academia

Pages: 378

Method: Book

Status: Library

This book grabbed my attention right away, thanks to its stunning cover. It has a Slytherin vibe, which was also the reaction my husband had when I showed it to him. However, don't let that influence you in any way.

This book is truly breathtaking. The story revolves around the main character, Effy, who is a rare find and captivates the reader with her softness and gentle feminism. She has been haunted by and suffered from hallucinations of the Fairy King for all her life. The only thing empowering her to fight against her plaguing nightmares is a book by her favorite author, Myrddin.

As the only female student in the architecture department, she finds herself battling rumors and proving she is worthy to be there. When she hears that she can apply to redesign Hiraeth Manor, Myrffind's estate, she never dreamed of being chosen. The estate is located on a cliff and is on the verge of crumbling from the last drowning.

When Effy arrives, she finds more than she ever imagined. There is a literature scholar who is secretive and condescending, secret passageways, a locked room, and many unanswered questions.

"A Study in Drowning" is an eerie, mysterious, romantic book that is definitely worth reading.

“There was an intimacy to all violence, she supposed. The better you knew someone, the more terribly you could hurt them.”

“You're not just one thing. Survival is something you do not something you are.”

“We must discuss, then, the relationship between women and water. When men fall into the sea, they drown. When women meet the water, they transform. It becomes vital to ask: is this a metamorphosis, or a homecoming?”

“How terrible, to navigate the world without a story to comfort you.”

“You don't have to take up a sword. Survival is bravery, too.”

“Anything can be taken from you, at any moment. Even the past isn’t guaranteed. You can lose that too, slowly, like water eating away at stone.”
