There is so much that goes into learning how to play DnD! But from every clip or video I have watched and every person I have talked to, their number one tip is to JUST PLAY!
Throughout my research I have found some pretty interesting things. There is so much I want to explore and experience. Apparently there are types of DnD players. Which doesn’t come as a surprise at all. We all know that “One Guy” when it comes to playing games but DnD seems to possess them all. Here is a list I gathered together during my research. I kept it as short as possible. Some people had a lot to say about certain types of players and I found myself both laughing and dreading future campaigns.
It will be exciting to come back when I have more experience and put my own twist on the characteristics.
There are:
Rules Lawyer - The die hard rule follower will keep the DM and players in line.
Power Gamers - Will master their character and thrive in gaining power.
The Munchkin - “Here to Win It” players. Whiners if you will.
Storytellers - They are in it for the story structure and will do and risk anything for it.
Murder Hobos - The ones who go in and kill everyone and everything. (Definitely my favorite title of them all)
The Actor - In it for the roleplaying.
The Watcher - The one who wants to play and knows what they are doing but won’t be the face of the party.
The Casual Player - They thrive best in mini games, here for fun but aren’t that consistent.
The Tactician - The planner & organizer.
The Librarian - They have a whole library of characters and cannot wait to play them.
The Wargamer - These players love combat.
The Mad Scientist - Yearns for chaos. Let’s poke the bear and see what happens. (It’s not real so let’s do it)
The Homebrewer - They like talking to the DM about some new and awesome homebrew content they want to try out.
The Supporter - Here because they love their friend and want to be there for them.
The Main Character - It’s a vile disease and may God have mercy on all your souls.
That Guy - The ruin it for everyone, player.
It doesn’t matter which “type” of player you are. For a good story, a good campaign, I think you need a little of each. But what do I know! (Said with the vibes of Jekyll and Hyde)
I can’t find myself leaning towards a certain type at the moment. I am still trying to figure out what I need to be doing. But I find myself already knowing the type of players some of my teammates are. Which is amazing and who knows, maybe they could say the same thing about me.
Only time will tell.
During our game, we got to experience some intense die rolling. We all stood up as Lorren shook his dice and threw them down. Everyone had their phones out either recording or taking pictures.
Ready.. Set...
ROLLLLL..
SCREAMS OF YESSS!!!! Lightning will strike true. It was a stellar moment! One we will probably cling to and have hope for again in the future.
