Title: The Inadequate Heir

Author: Danielle L. Jenson

Genre: Romantic Fantasy

Pages: 588

Method: Audible

Statues: Wishlist

I was looking for something to listen to on Audible that was free. Joshua is the one who listens to most of his reads, so I do my best not to use up his credits. And when I found “The Inadequate Heir” I had a mild heart attack. I have waited for what feels like ever to read this book and now that I have, it has shimmed its way to the top of my favorite read of February.

Book 1 and Book 2 have been sitting in my library constantly reminding me of their beautiful story. It’s an absolute travesty that I haven’t ordered “The Inadequate Heir” yet. I had no idea it was free in Audible. But now, mwahahaha!! I struck gold though, this audio version has sound effects and the voice actors pulled all the stops. Even though I lean more towards holding an actual book to read, I was highly impressed and actually recommend listening to this book if you can.

Let me count the ways of PERFECTION.

  1. Sound effects (On Audible)

  2. Voice actors (On Audible)

  3. Plot

  4. World Building

  5. Scheming & Politics

  6. Forbidden Love

  7. Enemies to Lovers

  8. Risk

Why list Risk? Because the stakes were so high! My heart was about to beat out of its nice little home while reading this book. I was experiencing all the feels.

Returning to The Bridge Kingdom was everything I didn’t know I could ask for.

How far is one willing to go to achieve the thing their heart desires most of all?

That is the question you get to see answered again and again. And not just by the main two characters. (Insert wiggling eyebrows because I am not going to spoil it for you)

The Inadequate Heir fills in the non-existent gaps of Bridge Kingdom and Traitor Queen. And what I mean by that is you get to read a side story you didn’t even know existed in the midst of Book 1 and Book 2.

Jenson did a marvelous job at continuing her world building and captivating your heart with new characters.

You get to know Keris, who is Lara’s brother, heir to the Maridrina Throne. Keris, unlike his father, does not wish to become king. He is very intelligent and cunning like his sister Lara. Throughout the story, you get to see inside his mind and the war he rages within when it comes to saving the woman he loves and playing his foes.

Zarrah, is a woman you quickly come to idolize and respect. Her heart beats for Valcotta. Every decision she makes is for the betterment of her people. Without question, she is ready to sacrifice herself to destroy every Maridirinian who opposes her.

When two people from opposite sides decide to fight for freedom when all they’ve known is war and hate, waves of change are bound to take place. Heartache and loss are part of that change and both Keris and Zarrah know it all too well.

While reading, I found myself with my eyes squinted trying to discern every action and method of reasoning. Much like Keris.

Both characters' growth was astoundingly paced. I caught myself giving Zarrah a “YES, that’s my girl” a few times.

“The Inadequate Heir” had my heart racing on more than one account. I cannot wait to read “The Endless War” to see what happens in the rest of their story.

This is a must read for all Fantasy & Fantasy Romance readers.

A Few Of My Favorite Quotes:

“A lifetime wouldn't be enough. Eternity wouldn't be enough. Not when I want to map every star in the sky with you in my arms.”

“Peace is like a dance. It only works if both partners are listening to the same music.”

“I do want to remake the world so that I can be with you. So that I can get down on my knees and ask you to be my wife. So that I can put a crown on your head and make you my queen. So I can build a shrine and worship you as my goddess. I want all of these things, yet I face a future with none of them, and I don't know whether I want to fall on my own blade or burn everything to ash because I do not want to let you go.”

“If you truly believe in something, you should be willing to suffer for it”
